It started to snow in the mountains here in the East. Snowshoe, one of my favorite ski areas in West Virginia, just sent em a photo of all the snow. This morning the News on TV was featuring all the snow on the ground. Unfortunately, I'm still thinking SUMMER. I know that ski season can start any time after Columbus Day but I need to shift gears.
I talked to my spies in Vermont and Maine and it looks like the big guys (Killington, Sunday River, etc.) are planning to open on November 11th, weather permitting. One of my friends said his daughter was going to hike up to the top of Killington mountain and ski down and a PR guy in Maine told me that tracks were seen coming down a trail, even though the ski area isn't open yet.
A few days ago, I got the following press release. "Good Morning! We have received a total of four inches of snow since yesterday morning and the flurries continue to fall over Snowshoe Mountain. At 6:00 a.m. this morning the temperature was recorded at 26 degrees at 3,200 feet and 24 degrees at 4,800 feet. Please be safe as the roads could be slippery this morning! With Mother Nature's continued help, as temperatures are forecast in the 30's throughout this week, Snowshoe Mountain Resort is planning on opening the slopes for the winter season on Wednesday, November 23rd--just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday!"
Today, they sent a follow-up. "Snowshoe Mountain, West Virginia's largest winter resort,
recorded a snowfall of 10 inches with temperatures in the mid 20's overnight. With
snowmaking operations nearly ready to get started, this blanket of natural snowfall has
everyone excited about the upcoming opening of the slopes on November 23rd--less than
one month away."
They sent me a photo of the snow with the caption, "Snowshoe's newest lodging complex, The Seneca, saw its first snowfall this week."
Luckily, I haven't taken the snow tires off my ski car, so I'm ready! It won't be long before I'm packing my ski bag and traveling to the mountains to document my ski adventures and covering some of the most exciting ski events in North America. In the coming months, you will be able to read about my impressions of the ski areas I visit and see the photos of the athletes that are going for the gold at events I cover. I'm looking forward to visiting a few "new" ski areas and testing the snow, as well as visiting some of my favorite haunts.
I'll be bring my camera and shooting freeskiers and riders taking BIG air and BIG chances. We will be featuring photos of Olympic competitors and some of our favorites on the US Ski Team. I might even be able to take some shots of a pretty ski bunny or two.
When you hit the slopes, keep you eye open for my, I'll be the guy with "SkiBumNews.com" on the back of his parka. Don't forget to say HI if you see me.
