On the magnificent World Cup mogul course at Deer Valley, in Park City, Utah, 70 competitors from the Intermountain Division competed in single & dual mogul events. Competitors from Utah, Idaho, Wyoming & Montana were represented. Deer Valley was host to last week’s World Cup & the 2002 Olympic aerial & mogul events. In addition to our freestyle celebrities, there were other celebrity sightings over this weekend, as the Sundance Film Festival kicked off in Park City.
The competition began with a mini-competition by members of the US & Swedish Freestyle Teams. The US Team included David Digravio, Landon Gardner, Sho Kashima, and Jay-Bowman Kirrigan. Former Intermountain Division competitor & world cup aerialist, Jeret “Speedy” Petersen was also seen hovering around the venue.
The big winner in the single mogul division was Sun Valley’s Nick Hanscom, who captured 1st place finishes on both days. Women’s 1st place finishes went to Ani Haas on Saturday & Annie Sera on Sunday. Sunday’s Dual Moguls winners were Cody Temple, Men’s, and Olivia Akerley, Women. The “Most Unbelievable ER Crash Without a Scratch” Award went to Greg Schroy, whose back flip off the bottom air went haywire, resulting in a triple somersault body slam on the next 3 moguls. No ER ambulance ride for Greg – he walked away with a bloody nose & a smile on his face!
According to judge Dana Riley, a former competitive mogul skier out of the East, “There’s a lot of talent coming up in the Intermountain Division. They are developing more depth and quality of the skiers. The Intermountain Division is becoming one of the strongest Divisions, producing such World Cup freestyle standouts as Nate Roberts & Jeret “Speedy” Peterson, Ski Team Members: Jay Bowman Kirrigan & Brian Wilson, and US Freestyle Development Team Members: Holt Haga & Nick Hanscom.
