CARDRONA DOWN UNDER

Renown for inspiring terrain and a quality snow experience. Wide runs and open slopes rule Conveniently located between Wanaka and Queenstown, central to the southern lakes region of New Zealand’s southern island. Three magic carpets & a beginner quad are just one of the reasons Cardrona is New Zealand’s best place for beginners. It is rated New Zealand’s number one snowboard resort with 4 competition halfpipes, gravity cross track and a huge terrain park.

 

It has excellent on-mountain accommodation and top national and international ski and snowboard events dominate an action packed calendar of events. They have a new fast track computerized ticketing system that means spending less time at the ticket office and more time on snow. A purpose built terrain trail under the double chair has been built. Wide enough for a mixed range of obstacles and stepped to create flow and some monster jumps. Once again the best terrain park in Kiwi land is at Cardrona.

 

Base facilities surround a central courtyard that includes a full licensed bar & restaurant, Snow Shop, self service cafe, and a Ski & Snowboard School. Full rental services including workshop, licensed Childcare, Apartment accommodation, medical center and guest services. It has a licensed full-day childcare center for ages 3 months to 5 years. Children Under 6 years ski for free. The kid’s pool has to 22 experienced, energetic and committed instructors.

 

Slope facilities: The largest pipe park in the southern hemisphere, that includes four halfpipes built to international competition specifications maintained by mechanical shaper, Terrain Park on purpose built run and Gravity Cross course. There is a separate 200-seat cafe on far side of mountain with expansive decks.

 

The Crown range highway linking Wanaka & Queenstown has been fully widened with substantial road barriers reducing the time from Queenstown to Cardrona to just 60 minutes (58km). Drive time from Wanaka is 35 minutes (34km) with daily shuttle service. Operating hours are from 8.45 A.M. – 4.P.M.

 

The lift ticket prices are low – NZ$ Adult $60, Student $50 & Child $30 (NZ$ are ½ US dollars in value). The Alpine Development Centre is large with 20 new full-time staff for the 2001 winter.

 

For the first year both the NZ Snowboard Championships and the NZ Alpine Ski Nationals will be held at the same resort – Cardrona. Cardrona won the NZ Snowboard Association resort of the year award in 2000. Based on outstanding halfpipe maintenance (right from the start of the season) and the huge Wonderpark 2000.
